Charles is on record several times in Cumberland Co., NC Court minutes from 1773 to 1784 indicating he resided there during this period and is reported as having been pardoned in 1779 by the NC House of Burgesses for stealing a horse in the Hillsboro District for which he was under sentence of hanging.  He sold land in Cumberland County in April 1784 and eventually moved to Warren County as he is listed as Major Shearin in the 1790 census for Warren County. He would have been a major in the Revolutionary War.  His father’s will shows the name of one son as Charles Jr. The 1790 census shows he had 3 sons and 3 daughters. No names were available for any of the daughters.
